It is a peptide hormone that stimulates growth, cell production, and tissue regeneration in humans and other vertebrates. This can lead to various signs of aging, such as loss of muscle mass, bone density, skin elasticity, decreased cognitive function and muscle growth, and a weakened immune system. Some people may also experience increased body fat, especially around the abdomen, and decreased energy levels. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/nejm199007053230101\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rudman 1990<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/edrv\/article\/14\/1\/20\/2548399\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Corpas 1993<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Growth Hormone and Physical Function<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Studies have shown, however, that supplementation with synthetic HGH can reverse some of these age-related changes. For example, in his 2013 meta-analysis, &#8220;Growth Hormone in the Aging Male,&#8221; Fred A. Sattler compiled a list of ten studies that all reported significant improvements in bone density, or strength in men between the ages of 60 and 85. (<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1521690X13000535\">Sattler 2013<\/a>) With an average lean body mass increase of 3.75 kg over 6 months, and concomitant decreases in body fat, as well as relevant improvements in muscle and bone strength, the ten highly heterogeneous studies clearly support the hypothesis that restoring youthful levels of human growth hormone can partially reverse some of the pathological physiological effects of aging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cognition and psychological well-being<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Given the presence of growth hormone receptors in the brain, particularly in areas important for cognition (<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/nrendo.2013.78\">Nyberg 2013<\/a>), it is not surprising that even a partial reversal of age-related HGH decline with GHRH analogues has been shown to have anti-aging effects on the brain. (<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0197458005000631\">Vitiello 2005<\/a>; <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamaneurology\/article-abstract\/1306261\">Baker 2012<\/a>) Similar benefits can be expected from the more specifically targeted growth hormone secretagogues (GHS), such as ipamorelin and CJC-1295 in the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/max-supplements.com\/bogo\/shop\/hgh\/maximize-hgh-booster-skin-patch-30-day-supply\/\">Maximize HGH Booster Skin Patch<\/a>, which have been shown to which are able to restore optimal pulsatile GH secretion. (<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/biomedgerontology\/article\/78\/Supplement_1\/38\/7199286\">Smith 2023<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">HGH, GHRH, GHS?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>All of these acronyms denote peptides that can compensate, restore, or supercharge the somatotropic axis: HGH, the actual hormone, often referred to simply as &#8220;GH&#8221;. GHRH, the growth-hormone-releasing hormone, which stimulates the pituitary gland to secrete GH. GHS, the acronym for growth hormone secretagogues, which act similarly to GHRH but at very specific receptors on the somatotroph cells in the pituitary gland, allowing for a more selective modulation of GH secretion and increased safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In their 2012 study, Baker et al. (<a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamaneurology\/article-abstract\/1306261\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2012<\/a>)\u00a0 observed significant improvements not only in the already cognitively impaired elderly, whose progressive cognitive decline not only slow down significantly over the 20-week treatment period, but was actually reversed. Notably, similar improvements were also observed in the 36 healthy 60-70-year-olds in the active control arm of the study. An interesting secondary finding of the Baker study should also be mentioned here: Consistent with the results of Sattler&#8217;s previously discussed paper (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1521690X13000535\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sattler 2013<\/a>), both healthy and cognitively impaired subjects experienced significant improvements &#8211; on average, a 7.4% reduction in body fat and a 3.7% increase in lean muscle mass. A statistically significant correlation between cognitive and physical improvements was not observed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>HGH and Athletic Performance<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/max-supplements.com\/bogo\/wp-content\/uploads\/a8553dbe-53a4-47e9-b186-f63077fd9be5.png?ssl=1\" alt=\"HGH can improve muscle mass, strength, power, endurance, recovery, and help with injury prevention.\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>HGH is not only beneficial for aging individuals. Athletes in various sports use and abuse it to improve muscle mass, strength, power, endurance, recovery, and help with injury prevention by stimulating protein synthesis, increasing blood flow, reducing inflammation, and promoting tissue repair. (<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cell.com\/trends\/endocrinology-metabolism\/fulltext\/S1043-2760(11)00030-0\">Birzniece 2011<\/a>; <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/edrv\/article\/40\/4\/1163\/5512652\">Holt 2019<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Muscle mass and performance<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most notable effects of HGH treatment on athletic performance is its ability to increase muscle mass. A meta-analysis of 44 studies involving 303 predominantly male (85%), young (mean age, 27\u00b13 years), lean and physically fit subjects found that HGH therapy increased the participants&#8217; lean mass by an average of 2.1 kg. (<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.acpjournals.org\/doi\/full\/10.7326\/0003-4819-148-10-200805200-00215\">Liu 2008<\/a>) These results have been replicated recently by Hermanson et al (<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S1096637417300382\">2017<\/a>), who report lean mass increases of 2.86 kg and, compared to the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.acpjournals.org\/doi\/full\/10.7326\/0003-4819-148-10-200805200-00215\">previously cited meta-analysis by Liu et al.<\/a> from 2008, a larger (1.22 vs. 0.9 kg) and, more importantly, statistically significant reduction in body fat. Notably, both, increases in lean mass and reductions in body fat were observed even in sedentary individuals, the effect was significantly more pronounced in studies with a strength \/ resistance training component and could be further enhanced by the provision of testosterone in both male and female athletes. (<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.acpjournals.org\/doi\/abs\/10.7326\/0003-4819-152-9-201005040-00007\">Meinhard 2010<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>WADA reports that the abuse of HGH alone or in combination with testosterone is widespread among athletes competing in both strength and endurance sports such as cycling, where its popularity is largely based on anecdotal, not clinical, evidence. As Bird et al. point out in their 2015 paper this &#8220;equivocal nature of the clinical evidence&#8221; may simply be a consequence of the fact that studies probing the effects of HGH on endurance athletes &#8220;may use lower doses than those taken by sports performers and hence may not provide a true reflection of its ergogenic potential&#8221; (<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/full\/10.1177\/0004563215609952\">Bird 2016<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Injury treatment<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/max-supplements.com\/bogo\/wp-content\/uploads\/BPC-injuryankle.jpg?resize=512%2C342&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Injury\" class=\"wp-image-2571\" width=\"512\" height=\"342\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/max-supplements.com\/bogo\/wp-content\/uploads\/BPC-injuryankle.jpg?w=1024&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/max-supplements.com\/bogo\/wp-content\/uploads\/BPC-injuryankle.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/max-supplements.com\/bogo\/wp-content\/uploads\/BPC-injuryankle.jpg?resize=768%2C512&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/max-supplements.com\/bogo\/wp-content\/uploads\/BPC-injuryankle.jpg?resize=600%2C400&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/max-supplements.com\/bogo\/wp-content\/uploads\/BPC-injuryankle.jpg?resize=800%2C534&amp;ssl=1 800w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/max-supplements.com\/bogo\/wp-content\/uploads\/BPC-injuryankle.jpg?resize=150%2C100&amp;ssl=1 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Acute injury treatment, specifically HGH&#8217;s ability to speed recovery from exercise-induced joint and muscle pain and tendon damage, is the third of the three most popular uses among athletes of all disciplines. Evidence in support of this use case comes from a 2010 double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled crossover study in which Doessing et al. observed a 1.3-fold increase in tendon and 5.8-fold increase in muscle collagen protein synthesis in healthy young men in response to GH treatment. (<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/physoc.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1113\/jphysiol.2009.179325\">Doessing 2010<\/a>) Further popularizing its (ab)use by both professional and recreational athletes are related to its direct tissue regenerative effects on bone, (<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S8756328201005877\">Maschke 2001<\/a>) and its protective effects on muscle tissue during immobilization and rehabilitation, (<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/physoc.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1113\/jphysiol.2013.261263\">Boesen 2013<\/a>) both of which make HGH even more appealing to athletes from various sports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>With great power comes great responsibility<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When used responsibly, human growth hormone (HGH) and GH secretagogues offer exciting opportunities for adults of various ages to regain their health and optimize their physique and performance.
